Urging strongly to apply early, the Embassy, however, clarified that there is no need to pay for entering the EDV lottery.

“There is no fee to enter the DV lottery. The U.S. Embassy recommends against using a consultant to assist you with your application,” reads the statement.

According to the Embassy, the entries for the lottery are to be submitted electronically during the one-month period.

For fiscal year 2016, 50,000 diversity visas (DVs) will be available. There is no cost to register for the DV Program.  Nepalese citizens are eligible to take part in DV-2016 Program, though that from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan are not eligible.

DV 2016 Program :

Online registration for the DV 2016 Program will begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2014 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (GMT-4), and conclude on Saturday, November 2, 2014 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (GMT-4).

Applicants who are selected in the lottery (“selectees”) must meet simple, but strict, eligibility requirements in order to qualify for a diversity visa. Selectees are chosen through a randomized computer drawing. Diversity visas are distributed among six geographic regions and no single country may receive more than seven percent of the available DVs in any one year.

For DV-2016, natives of the following countries are not eligible to apply, because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years:

Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.

Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible.

According to the provision of EDV, only people with 12 years of formal education are eligible to apply for the program.

“The educational requirement is a minimum of twelve years of formal education (generally, completion of SLC+2). Vocational degrees, including the CTEVT, will count only if they are accepted in Nepal as a basis for further academic study to all programs in all institutes of higher education,” states the statement.
